Discussion Circle Reflection - NOT COMPLETED

What did you learn today? Can you think of any connections between the story and the outside world? Any other thoughts or comments?

I've learnt a few things today like new words, how it is to discuss in a group, and talk about the chapter. There are lots of connections between the story and the outside world. Piggy is and equivalent to a nerd who is a loner and is always picked on, while Jack and Ralph are like girls with all their fighting here and there. The island is also similar to many deserted islands around the world, and what if there was actually a lord of the flies on one of them as well as the boys being stranded. The mountains, the beach, the lagoons, the trees, the rock pools, the animals - they're all real. The discussion also involved how the author, William Golding, had used lots of words to symbolise what the sentence means in the whole paragraph. He makes words look like they have a lot of faces and personalities and how they mean.

- Why Golding chose to strand the boys on the island.
- Why the conch plays an important role in the book.
- Make new friends by helping each other.

- Making a glossary of the words I don't know.
- writing essays.

- Understanding and knowing the words I didn't know before.

My performance in English that I am proud of:

- being able to write essays better by practicing a lot.
- reading more.
- knowing new vocab so I can use them in the future.

My performance in English that I would like to improve:

- Use a wider range of big words in essays or pieces of writing.
- Write more so essay writing won't be as hard.

How I intend to go about achieving my targets and moving forward in English:

- I NEED to read more in order to use a wider range of big words in essays.
- I have to understand why Golding has used language like that so I won't get stuck while reading the book.

Microcms of the Island.

What does microcosm mean? Well, it means that something really small can represent something big. So, in relation to the island from being somewhere so small and nothing happening, became somewhere still small but big and lots of things happening. The fire and the camps are some of them being big.

IM THE LEADER!

Well one thing I know for sure is that I’m in the same position as all of you, scared, afraid and terrified without any adult supervision at all and not knowing what is going to happen to us. But, what I do know is that we have to all work together to survive. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! quoted from High School Musical. I know you guys don’t really want to do work, but do you want to die of starvation or thirst?! I don’t think so. Communicating, one of the most important things we must have. During the time we are on this island we can get to know each other better and help one another at everything. Without communication, how are we going to survive? When we get rescued(see im being very positive) won’t your parents want to see you alive? They wouldn’t want to see you 10 feet under the ground now would they. So, in order to do that, we have to give jobs to each other so that we can help each other survive, not just the one person doing everything(just an example) What you have to know is that life goes on and you have to keep moving on from all the bad things in the past, things happen for a reason and so the quote from Albert Einstein relates, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” So enough with all this emotional talk, from now on we have to keep our heads high, be positive and WIN THIS BATTLE!

- I would state why I'm fit to be a leader.

- I like Hakeem's speech best because he included everyone and their abilities they could do while on the island.

- yes

2. Why?

- because then we won't learn or won't do anything.

3. To what extent do you think that rules help society to survive?

-  It helps the society by informing them about what to do and what not to do, so that we don't make a mistake in doing the wrong thing.

What did you learn during this activity?

- I have learned that in order to be persuasive and get what you want, use AFOREST it helps a lot.

What new skills have you developed?
- to use rhetorical questions and emotive language so the audience you are persuading think about what you're saying and feel what you're feeling so they'll agree with you.

How will this be useful in your life?

- when you want something because persuasive language manipulates you words.

If you could have another go at writing and delivering your speech, what would you do differently?
- I would use more emotive language so the audience could sense what I'm going through and I would also set examples of people who aren't fit to be on the plane so they would see the reason why they shouldn't.

FRIAR LAWRENCE IS GUILTY!

Lady Capulet:

Friar Lawrence caused the death of Romeo and Juliet because he was responsible for telling Friar John to give the letter Juliet wrote for Romeo, to Romeo before anything bad "could" happen. Plus a friar is not responsible to get involved in anything sinful.

Questions for Friar Lawrence:
1) Why did you have to agree to go along with the plan?
2) If you are really a friar, why did you not think that this plan was sinful?
